Introduction

Performers:

Virgo Veldi (saxophone)
Ulla Krigul (organ)

Programme:
Jürjendal. „Möödas on hetk, ümber on aeg“ (premiere of the new version)
Bach, Bédard, Prauliņš, etc.

This programme bridges the historic and the contemporary, blending works by the great master Johann Sebastian Bach with modern classical compositions from Canada’s Denis Bédard and Latvia’s Uģis Prauliņš. The pairing of the organ, the centuries-old king of instruments, with the much younger saxophone creates a dialogue that resonates within the medieval walls of Niguliste Church, where historical architecture meets an inspiring modern exhibition space.

As longtime chamber partners, Veldi and Krigul are known for their imaginative programming and rich tonal blending. A prominent Estonian saxophonist and educator, Virgo Veldi holds a professorship at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and also teaches at the Tallinn School of Music and Ballet. His career as a soloist and chamber musician spans both domestic and international stages, marked by a fluid tone, technical mastery, and a genre-defying repertoire.

Ulla Krigul stands out as an active organist of her generation, performing frequently in solo recitals, ensembles, and orchestral settings. Her interpretive style is defined by a collaborative and experimental spirit; alongside the standard organ literature, she frequently performs contemporary music and has championed numerous premieres by Estonian composers.
