Kirke Karja is a pianist and composer, best known for her work as the member of international trio Karja/Renard/Wandinger. In recent years, the trio has performed at numerous prestigious jazz festivals, including Jazzfest Berlin, Punkt, Jazzweek Cologne, Jazzahead, Vossa Jazz, and Südtirol Jazzfest. Their extensive touring has brought them to concert stages in Finland, Norway, the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, Hungary, Poland and Canada.
Due to her musical collaborations, Kirke Karja frequently spends time in Germany, where she is a member of Phillip Dornbusch’s group Projektor and performs in Fabian Dudek’s piece “Day by Day”. Karja´s noteworthy concert programme is based on Paul Hindemith’s “Ludus Tonalis” in three parts. She also portrays the pianist Käbi Laretei in the Estonian Drama Theatre production “The Soloist”.
As a composer, Karja has written music for both chamber ensembles and orchestras. In 2022, she composed a piano concerto for pianist Sten Heinoja, which premiered a year later in Canada, performed by Kirke Karja and the Hamilton Philharmonic. One of her most significant recent compositions is “Murenemine” (Crumbling), commissioned by Ludensemble.
In 2022, Kirke Karja was awarded Jazz Musician of the Year, and in 2024, she received the Jazz Composer of the Year award. Additionally, in 2024, her trio Karja/Renard/Wandinger was honored as Jazz Ensemble of the Year.
